More About Me

My name is Sam Nelson. As you’ve no doubt figured out by now, I am a web designer and developer. I have always had a great interest in almost anything related to computers, but it wasn’t until I enrolled in the Digital Media Design program at NAIT that I began to pursue a career in web. Originally, the program caught my eye with its 3D modeling and video editing courses. While I thoroughly enjoyed the exposure to both of those forms of media, I found myself always wanting to learn more about designing and developing for the internet and so eventually opted to major in that field of study.

The wealth of knowledge that was instilled upon me during my two years at NAIT was invaluable. While I realize that in an evolving field such as this you can never stop learning, the range of skills that were taught in such a short period of time were immense. Having come into the program with little experience coding for the web, I quickly picked up the HTML and CSS programming languages as well as the fundamentals of page layout and visual hierarchy. As I progressed through the program, those skills increased with more advanced techniques and I was also introduced to Javascript, jQuery, PHP, MySQL and third party CMS programs such as Wordpress and Drupal. I also learned how to optimize a site for search engines, improved my project management skills, and increased my knowledge in graphic design. I am now utilizing all of these skills as a freelance web designer in Edmonton, Alberta, and look forward to continuing to discover and grow in this ever changing industry.

That said, there’s more to me than websites. When I’m not in front of my computer, I seek balance in my life through physical activity. Basketball has always been an important part of my lifeand while I am unable to devote as much time to the sport as I used to, it still holds its place as my favourite pastime. I have also recently rediscovered my love of skiing and enjoy camping right up until the the snow falls. Video games, movies and playing the electric guitar take most of my attention when I’m relegated to the indoors.
